Sudo update-alternatives -install /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.9 50 Sudo update-alternatives -install /usr/bin/gcc gcc /usr/bin/gcc-4.9 50 Sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test This step is not needed on versions of Ubuntu beyond 14.04 as they come with versions 4.9 or above of gcc and g++. Fortunately, there is a PPA to get a newer version.
